ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

 

 

DEFINITION: The Alternative High School Guidance Counselor shall be that employee member of the school staff designated by the Superintendent of Schools to have the general responsibility for counseling Grades 9-12.  

 

PREREQUISITE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum:  Master's degree in Guidance from an accredited institution  
  • Minimum:  Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education certification for the position of Guidance                    Counselor, 5-12.

SALARY: According to the Everett Teachers Association contract.   

WORKING TIME: Hours will be Monday to Thursday 11:30 AM to 7:00 PM and Friday from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Plus 5 additional days at the discretion of the building principal.   

DUTIES:

  • Will be under the supervision of Central Administration, Principal, Assistant Principal and the Director of Guidance.
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations of the school in which they are working and the principal, regarding administrative policies.
  • Provide direct academic, social, and personal supportive services to students individually, in classrooms, and in large groups.
  • Assist students set academic, personal, college and career goals.
  • Provide responsive services as needed to address academic, social and emotional concerns.
  • Act as 504 Team Leader for eligible students on caseload.
  • Monitor students who are academically at risk.
  • Collaborate with teachers and parents to help students create a plan for success.
  • Advise  students (and their families) on all aspects of the college application process.
  • Write letters of recommendation and assist students with their applications through Naviance.
  • Participate in the planning of college and career related events including evening information sessions.
  • Work collaboratively with staff members to implement curriculum and help build school culture across the school.
  • Participate in summer professional development of an additional week (or equivalent time) prior to the start of the school year.
  • Assist with the coordination of AP and PSAT testing.
  • Work with administration to uphold and support all school policies and procedures.
  • Assist in special projects as assigned by the Principal and Director of Guidance.
  • Attend team based meetings to collaborate with teachers to support students academically and socially.
  • Proctor MCAS.
  • Collaborate with outside and partnering agencies.
  • Attend IEP meetings.
  • Monitor attendance for all students on assigned caseload.
  • Communicate with parents regarding academic progress and attendance monitoring.
  • Complete referrals for services.
  • Filing 51(a) reports.
  • Attend teacher conferences and other night events as assigned by the director/principal.
  • Advise and create schedules for students.
  • Maintain student information system- X2.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned in helping to maintain a safe and orderly school environment.
