9-12 ESL Teacher
EHS English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers are responsible for implementing research- based second language acquisition strategies to teach English Learners in grades 9-12. Teachers will utilize district curricula for standalone ESL classes that include common assessments. Teachers will be responsible for the progress monitoring of ELs and communicating with students’ families. ESL Teachers at Everett High School are responsible for attending weekly department meetings with the EL Department Head to examine formative assessments and collaborate with ESL teacher peers, in addition to sheltered content teacher peers to increase EL participation and academic achievement. Teachers should be well versed in the WIDA Frameworks, Massachusetts State Standards, and cultural responsiveness, to promote equity and to differentiate for a diverse population of ELs, including SLIFE and ELs with Disabilities.
REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor’s Degree in Education, ESL and/or Applied Linguistics - Massachusetts Teaching Licensure in ESL - SEI Endorsement
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: - Master’s Degree in Education and/or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - 3 or more years of high school teaching experience - Experience teaching Newcomer English Learners - Dual Licensure in Special Education and/or Content Area - Experience working in an urban public schools setting - Expertise with ESL and bilingual education teaching methodologies - Proficiency in a second language
DUTIES - Provide individualized English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to English Language Learners in accordance with the Massachusetts State Frameworks and WIDA standards. Plan effective ESL units of study and lessons that align with district curriculum maps. - Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use of effective, culturally and linguistically relevant instructional practices. - Plan and participate in data collection and analysis to identify target areas of EL Success Plans, instruction and small group work. - Collaborate and co-plan with ESL teacher teammates as well as Special Education inclusion teachers to provide the highest quality instruction and support for English Learners.
- Proctor MCAS and ACCESS assessments for English Learners. - Assist in EL paperwork management and compliance measures set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. - Use all available technology and virtual curricula provided by the district to create engaging lessons and supports that are linked with 21st Century skills and remote accessibility. - Manage classroom behavior with Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies that motivate students and limit disruptions. - Incorporate Social Emotional Learning standards and curriculum that promote self-confidence, team-building and informed decision making. - Communicate with students’ families on a regular basis using culturally responsive strategies that promote two-way conversations. - Employ a strong growth mindset and participate in professional development that is relevant to the challenges of urban education in order to close opportunity gaps. - Collaborate with guidance counselors to refer students who are in need of Social Emotional support. - Collaborate with Special Education leadership and teacher colleagues to review IEPs and ensure all accommodations are properly and consistently delivered. - Contribute to school-wide initiatives and events which may be assigned by the Principal and Assistant Principal.
SALARY Based on the Everett Teachers Association salary scale.
WORKING TIME: The length of the work day will be 7:45- 2:45 PM.
